A professional footballer, Adam Chapman, has been jailed for killing a pensioner in a car crash, just weeks after his man of the match perfomance helped team won promotion to the Football League.

The 20 year-old was instrumental in Oxford United’s win over York City during last month’s Conference play-off final that earned his team promotion back to the Football League after a four-year absence.

But the midfielder’s promising career has been thrown into turmoil after he was jailed for causing the death of Tom Bryan, 77, by dangerous driving.

Nottingham Crown Court was told Chapman, who won man of the match during the game at Wembley Stadium, had sent at least 15 text messages on his BlackBerry mobile in the moments leading up to the horrific smash.

Michael Auty, prosecuting, told the court the illegal use of his mobile caused Chapman to swerve onto the wrong side of the A620 near North Wheatley, Notts, in May last year.

The court heard that as he came over the brow of a hill, his Vauxhall Corsa ploughed head on into Mr Bryan’s Honda Civic because the pensioner had “no time to react".

Mr Auty said Mr Bryan, of Retford, Notts, later died of massive internal injuries while Chapman, who had only passed his test six months earlier, escaped unhurt.

Mr Bryan's partner of six years, Glenys Bloomer, 75, who was in the passenger seat, suffered a broken wrist and severe bruising.

The "virtually inseparable” pair had known each other for more than 60 years but become reacquainted following the death of her husband in 2002.

The court was told that Chapman, a Northern Ireland Under-21 international player, initially claimed the accident occurred when he pulled down his sun visor.

He admitted using his Blackberry during the journey but when his car was stationary and his last message was sent five minutes before the crash.

But an analysis of his phone records later found he sent three texts and received one "just prior" to the collision.

Chapman, of, Clarborough, Notts, had admitted one count of causing dangerous driving.

In a victim statement read to the court Mrs Bloomer said she "missed Mr Bryan every day of her life" and found his “his loss almost unbearable”.

Graham Huston, defending, urged Judge John Milmo QC not jail his client.

“The fact his going to prison will curtail a very promising career,” he said.

“He is at a watershed at the moment. This is the year he could expect to move on to greater things.

"He (has) the prospect of becoming a full international for his country and he will expect that teams in a higher league and the Premier League may be looking at him."

But Judge Milmo jailed him for 30 months due to his driving being of "a substantial risk of danger”.

“You are well regarded as a professional footballer and that career must be interrupted by a custodial sentence,” he said.

Oxford United said it would continue to support Chapman.
