He was most recently a mentor to the manager of the Irish national football team.
Robson was created a Knight Bachelor in 2002, is a member of the English Football Hall of Fame, and was the honorary president of Ipswich Town. From 1991 onwards he suffered recurrent medical problems with cancer, and in August 2008, he admitted defeat to lung cancer. He said: "My condition is described as static and has not altered since my last bout of chemotherapy...I am going to die sooner rather than later. But then everyone has to go sometime and I have enjoyed every minute." Robson died of lung cancer on 31 July 2009.

It was hard for me because I didn't want to think that he was dying, it wasn't that image of Bobby Robson that I wanted to keep forever, it wasn't that voice that I wanted to hear. I wanted, and I will always keep it with me, the Bobby Robson of every day, a man with an extraordinary passion for life and football, with extraordinary enthusiasm. Bobby Robson is one of those people who will never die, not just for what he did in his career, for a victory more or a victory less, but for everything that he gave to those who like me were lucky to know him and walk by his side. My thoughts and embrace go to his loved ones."
In his condolences, José Mourinho is joined by president Moratti and FC Internazionale, who are close to the family of Sir Bobby Robson in the memory of one of the great masters of English and world football.

Mourinho: Robson je bio entuzijast

Povodom smrti velikana engleskog i svjetskog nogometa, Bobbyja Robsona (76), sa svih strana svijeta stižu izrazi sućuti njegovoj porodici.

Oglasio se tako i njegov učenik Jose Mourinho, strateg milanskog Intera i jedan od najtraženijih trenera današnjice, koji je od Robsona učio zanat dok je ovaj radio u Barceloni.

- Nisam se čuo s Robsonom posljednja dva mjeseca jer mu je bilo jako teško. Bilo mi je teško nazvati ga jer sam odbijao pomisliti da mu se bliži kraj i nisam ga želio zapamtiti u takvome stanju. Uvijek ću pamtiti Bobbyja Robsona po strasti koju je osjećao za nogomet i po njegovom entuzijazmu. On je jedan od onih ljudi koji neće nikada umrijeti radi svega onoga što je dao ljudima poput mene, koji sam bio sretan što sam imao priliku raditi s njim. Moje misli su uz njegove najbliže – poručio je Mourinho putem internetskih stranica Intera.

Oglasili su se i aktuelni selektor engleske reprezentacije Fabio Capello, kao i trener Manchester Uniteda Sir Alex Ferguson.

- Nikada nisam bio preponosan da bih ga pitao za savjet, koji je on davao slobodno i bezuvjetno. U svoje 23 godine rada u Engleskoj ne postoji osoba koju bih postavio iznad Bobbyja Robsona. Snaga i hrabrost koju je pokazao posljednjih godina u borbi s rakom su neopisivi. Uvijek je imao osmijeh na licu, uvijek je imao prijateljsku riječ i nikada nije spominjao vlastite probleme – rekao je Ferguson.

- Sir Bobby je bio divan čovjek, pravi džentelmen. Užasno je tužno što je izgubio svoju posljednju borbu protiv raka, ali nikada neće biti zaboravljen. Bio je istinski veliki čovjek – izjavio je Capello.
